Synthesis designed this Band Shell Park concept as a pivotal feature of the Village of Lake Placid, ascending from the shore of Mirror Lake to connect with the Village’s main street and hub of commercial and tourist activity. The design strengthens the connection of street and park, emphasizes the view of lake and mountains, incorporates a landscape palette of stone and native plants, and integrates the site with architecture to create a multi-use area that offers a variety of spaces and opportunities for activity.

ADA site accessibility was a primary consideration. Working with existing topography, a gently sloping walkway winds from street level into the heart of the Park. The terraced walkway creates an amphitheatre-like form wide enough to serve as seating during performances, while the stone retaining walls offer additional seating options. The walkway provides access to the shop entry areas adjacent to the Park. The Band Shell is located to the southwest side of the Park, preserving the central view across the lake, and is oriented for optimal sun angles.

The Band Shell appears to emerge from the rock base on which it sits. The slender truss and cable system makes the sail-like tensioned fabric that forms the roof appear to be floating above the structure, framing a view of the lake, echoing the mountains beyond, and directing sound upward toward the audience. Removable acoustic panels enhance the sound of performances. During non-performance times the Band Shell provides seating and shelter for those wishing to sit and enjoy the view.
