Synthesis LLP and River Street Planning to Develop Seaway Trail Tourism Development Zone Plan for 1000 Islands-St. Lawrence River Communities

River Street Planning & Development LLC and Synthesis LLP of Schenectady, NY, have been selected as project consultant for the development of a Seaway Trail Tourism Development Zone Plan for a 100-mile stretch of the Seaway Trail scenic byway along the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. The 454-mile-long Seaway Trail is a New York State-designated scenic driving route and was one of first nationally-recognized America's Byways.

The New York State¹s Department of Transportation Scenic Byways Program and Department of State, the Jefferson County¹s Job Development Corporation and Planning Office and the Thousand Islands International Tourism Council have partnered with the not-for-profit Seaway Trail, Inc., based in Sackets Harbor, NY, to contract with River Street Planning & Development and Synthesis of Schenectady to complete a Seaway Trail Tourism Development Zone Plan for Jefferson and St. Lawrence County Communities by February 1, 2005.

"River Street's strengths in facilitating public processes, developing a consensus vision, and developing economic and market condition analysis leading to a detailed action plan will best complement our local steering committee and Seaway Trail staff," comments David Cutter, Seaway Trail, Inc. Landscape Architect and Planner.

River Street consultants will hold a series of visioning sessions in byway communities in the plan's zone that reaches from Henderson to Morristown.

"Comments gathered at the meetings in byway communities will help identify key themes and tourism development opportunities for those areas of the Seaway Trail. We are interested in working with those who live and work along the Trail to identify potential tourism investments and to solidify the vision, goals and strategic direction for Seaway Trail, Inc. for this important stretch of the byway," comments Teresa Mitchell, Seaway Trail, Inc. Executive Director.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity. The Seaway Trail is a unique organization which shares our team’s mission of balancing community aspirations for sustainable economic growth with strategies that protect and promote environmental and community quality of life. River Street Planning is widely recognized for its success in focusing community energy on unique assets and challenges leading to greater cooperation among common interests. Together with Synthesis LLP, we look forward to working with hundreds of local citizens through the visioning and action planning process,” comments Margaret Irwin, River Street Planning Project Manager.

The Tourism Development Zone Plan will include:

  • a strategy for anchor and business recruitment
  • elements for enhancing way-finding and interpretative signage
  • a feasibility analysis for specific interest projects
  • a series of graphically-rich fact sheets describing relevant case studies and best management practices for tourism development.
