Schenectady. Synthesis LLP, an international
architectural firm based here, recently completed drawings
for the new Schenectady YMCA.
The Capital District YMCA has raised more than half of the
$8 million needed to build the new recreation and exercise
facility on the city's north side. Construction could begin
early next year.
The new building is expected to incorporate the latest trends
in fitness center design and contain a full-day day care center.
The YMCA expects to replace its decades-old facility at
13 State St. with a two-story, 60,000-square-foot building
at the former Big N plaza on Nott Street. The Capital District
YMCA has expanded in the suburbs over the last 11 years, with
new facilities in Clifton Park, Guilderland, East Greenbush,
Saratoga Springs and Bethlehem.

A DRAWING shows the planned exterior
of the new Capital District YMCA facility in Schenectady.
Synthesis said the design will incorporate the following
elements:
- A six-lane pool with a shallow pool for swim lessons,
a steam room, sauna and whirlpool.
- A full-size gymnasium.
- Three-lane running track.
- Men’s, women’s, family, boy’s and girl’s
locker room facilities.
- Day care center for 50 children.
- Wellness center with a variety of exercise equipment.
- Fitness/aerobics studios.
- Rock climbing wall.
- Children’s gymnasium.
- Teen center.
- Community rooms.
