Synthesis was the lead design consultant for the construction of the new $20 million Regional Headquarters for the New York State Department of Transportation in downtown Schenectady. Synthesis worked with the New York State Office of General Services (OGS) team leaders and Turner Construction Company to develop a state-of-the-art “green” design solution that is also an important part of the city fabric. Brick and cast stone in traditional punched-opening arrangements reflect the City’s turn-of-the-century’s Mercantile style of design. The design of the base reflects the first floor retail architecture prevalent in the downtown, significant transparency, large glass openings, steel lintels above glass, and lighting above the storefront bays.The 125,000 square feet, four-story office building is a U.S. Green Building Council L.E.E.D. Certified Silver level “Green Building,” only one point shy of the “Gold” level. The design cuts utility and water usage, improves indoor air quality, uses locally produced construction materials, and contributes to an environmentally-friendly construction effort set forth by the United States.

Synthesis provided architectural design and space planning for the development of this 4-story, 100,000 square foot regional headquarters on an urban site in Albany, New York. The masonry facade was designed to blend with the historic character of downtown Albany, while reflecting modern design principles. Synthesis suggested the creation of a historic wall feature in the main lobby utilizing salvaged brick, reflecting the building that was demolished to make way for new construction.

Synthesis was design consultant for a several year, multiple-phase renovation of One Commerce Plaza, formerly Capitol Hill Twin Towers Office Center, adjacent to the New York State Capitol in Albany, New York. Working with the building owner and management company, Synthesis has provided life-safety and building code analyses for proposed tenant space renovations and existing building exiting systems for the high-rise 20 story structure, and also provided schematic design consultation for the replacement of the building’s exterior stone cladding and glass curtain wall systems.As part of the continuing building modernization, Synthesis is the Architect of Record for the replacement of all building perimeter entry systems and security upgrades. Synthesis has also been retained as interior designer for proposed renovations and alterations of the main lobby, including removal of the escalators, all new security systems, and an entire new finish package to modernize the lobby area while providing extra security in the wake of September 11th.

A dilapidated tavern occupied valuable waterfront property. Synthesis was commissioned to envision a new destination place for the Capital Region and beyond, by creating a distinctive restaurant building and site, to encourage use by local residents as well as boaters who would stop at the newly constructed boat-docking facilities.The result is a well proportioned, visually captivating building with distinguishing features that attract users from the road as well as the river. The interior and exterior detailing, the quality cuisine, and the ambiance created at this lovely riverfront site, have combined to make this restaurant one of the hottest spots in the region.

Synthesis converted a former industrial building into a destination cafe that contributes greatly to the growing arts and entertainment area in downtown Schenectady. The existing unadorned brick facade was removed and a new detailed facade with traditionally proportioned pilasters and inset panels was created using standard face brick, Italian tiles, limestone base and lintels, and a cast stone ornamental cornice. A modern glass canopy with vertical elongated lettering mounted above was added over the main entrance doors into the retail area. Beautifully crafted Italian casework was imported by the owners of the facility to showcase the pastries and products for sale. Synthesis has been responsible for a number of award-winning and elegant design solutions in downtown Schenectady, including the recently expanded Municipal Parking Garage and the New York State Department of Transportation office building both to the north of Villa Italia Pasticceria.

Outstanding Appearance Award

Synthesis renovated this turn-of-the-century office building into a 23 room hotel, conference center, and upscale bar and lounge. Although much of the original interior ornament had been removed, the building boasted several unique design features, including a nearly-intact cast iron and brick facade, an original wrought iron elevator cage, a cast and wrought iron stairway, and a decorative plaster ceiling discovered during construction. Many of these original features were restored. Interior spaces throughout the building were also redesigned by Synthesis, including selecting finishes, furnishings, and artwork.
