Dolgeville Central School District Dolgeville, New York

Dolgeville Central School District hired Synthesis to conduct a one-day SAFEdesign Workshop at their Central School to assist the District in solving a highly complex series of traffic and pedestrian conflicts so they could begin to build the necessary campus safety measures into their 5-year plan and the next Capital Improvement project. As the school currently functions, there is no clear separation of buses, cars and pedestrians, which is not only hazardous, but also causes traffic to back up over one third of a mile into village streets. In one day, Synthesis was able to meet with members of the district, view the drop-off sequence, explore the site, design a creative approach to campus safety, develop a cost estimate for the proposed work and make a presentation to the school district summarizing the results of the workshop. Working within the limits of the site, our plan proposed the addition of a designated bus loop, a parent drop-off loop, clearly designated and fence-enforced pedestrian zones and crossings, safer access points for parking, improved signage and additional parking.

Site and safety improvements for Little Falls High School / Middle School included the addition of bus loops, parent drop-off zones, speed tables (clearly designated raised crosswalks), reconfigured parking, enhanced entry plazas for both schools and wayfinding signage to direct parents and visitors. School board members, school officials and parents have commented that these new improvements have greatly improved the safety, clarity and efficiency of the campus.

Duanesburg High School Site Improvements:Synthesis completed a SAFEdesign analysis and design proposal for the improvement of the Duanesburg High School as part of a 5-Year Plan. As is typical of many rural schools, the campus design had undergone many changes and adjustments in response to addressing individual needs of the school over time, but without the benefit of a master plan to address the safety needs of the campus as a whole. Our goal was to look at the vehicular and pedestrian needs of the school and present a balanced approach of SAFEdesign that worked within the constraints of the site. Based on this approach, Synthesis proposed the addition of a separated bus loop, a parent drop-off zone, clearly articulated and enforced pedestrian zones with one designated crossing, and the addition of wayfinding and safety signage.Duanesburg Elementary School Site Improvements:As part of a Five Year Plan, Synthesis completed a SAFEdesign analysis and design proposal for the improvement of the Duanesburg Elementary School. One of the major goals of design approach was to separate the bus drop-off area and circulation route from the parking so that the majority of cars would not have to back into on-coming traffic in this busy area, thereby greatly reducing conflicts and making the drop-off sequence much safer. The design also established a parent drop-off area that would employ fencing to funnel students to one designated crossing location, which would eliminate the possibility of children passing unnoticed between school buses. Synthesis was able to accomplish the majority of these changes within the boundaries of the existing parking by reconfiguring the green space to physically separate bus, car and pedestrian zones.

Working within a tight site improvement budget for the Moriah Central School Capital Improvements Project, Synthesis was able to design a bus loop that could be cut into the existing parking lot in a way that preserved the majority of the existing asphalt surface, which is in excellent condition. In addition to the bus loop, Synthesis also designed a parent drop-off area at the entry to the Elementary School. This new design will allow for a much better separation of buses, cars and pedestrians, as well as significantly improving access and circulation. Another important component of the project was making all of the entries from the parking areas and drop-off zones accessible. Synthesis also added a new parking area and reconfigured existing lots to create designated crossing zones and economize parking, thereby creating an additional 81 spaces.

Little Falls Central School District Benton Hall Academy Little Falls, New York

Benton Hall Academy is an historic, monumental elementary school located in the heart of Little Falls, New York. The site, situated on a steep hill, posed a number of challenges. Our design focused on creating a series of plazas near the main building entrances that would create gathering spaces for students, teachers and parents; mitigate cross-slopes and drainage issues at major thoroughfares; foster a stronger connection between the school and the adjacent playground and park; and aesthetically enhance the building in a manner befitting the historic character of the building.
